General Summary

RNFA As a RN First Assistant, performs a variety of duties in the operative treatment of surgical patients. Intraoperatively, practices at the direction of the surgeon and does not concurrently function as a scrub nurse. Assesses the patient preoperatively and develops a nursing care plan based on assessment. Assists in positioning, skin preparation and draping of the patient. Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose. Evaluates the patient postoperatively and participates in discharge planning. Performs other medical services as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Provides primary surgical assistance to the surgeon during the operative procedure.
  • Assesses the patient preoperatively and develops and communicates a patient plan of care based on assessment.
  • Assists in positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient.
  • Provides hemostasis, wound exposure, handles tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissue, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose.
  • Assists in transporting the patient postoperatively.
  • Communicates information to the post anesthesia care unit.
  • Communicates information to the family as appropriate.
  • Evaluates the patient postoperatively and participates in discharge planning.
  • Variation of duties may result based on the assigned customer care unit(s). This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the RN. Unit based skill lists outline expectations beyond the house wide RN requirements. SYS-NURS-L Nursing Education Requirements Policy outlines current certification(s) required for specific areas of nursing practice and is considered to be part of the job description.
  • In addition to requirements specified in the license and certification section below, current BLS certification for all areas of nursing practice is required. - Current certification may be required for the following areas of nursing practice: - Emergency Care Center - ACLS, PALS - Intensive Care Center & MSCC Lead - ACLS, PALS - L&D - ACLS, NRP, - Experienced L&D nurses will obtain within 6 months and new L&D nurses will obtain at 1 year of experience - NICU - NRP - PEDS - PALS - PCC/PACU/ENDO - ACLS, PALS - Procedural - ACLS

Common Expectations:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains professional affiliations and enhances professional growth and development to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in professional activities and medical education to maintain national certification.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Attends meetings as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Associates Degree exception for those practicing prior to January 1, 2020, may continue to practice at current level of education. Required or
  • Bachelors Degree required for anyone who started practicing after January 1, 2020. Required

Work Experience:

  • 2 years Perioperative nursing experience in both a scrub and circulating role. Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Nurse Multi State License Upon Hire Required and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required and
  • Certified Perioperative Nurse Upon Hire Required
  • Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant within 1-1/2 years Preferred and
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire Preferred

Courses and Training:

  • Successful completion of an RNFA program that includes a didactic and at least 120 hours of clinical component. Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment and skills specific to the expanded role of RNFA clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the RNFA assists.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate corrective action.
  • Demonstrates ability to function effectively and harmoniously as a team member.
