Are you destined to become a physician? We’ll help you through medical school. And we’ll help you come home to serve the communities you know and love.
As a mission-driven organization, WellSpan is committed to transforming the health of the communities we serve in central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland—and to educating medicine’s next generation of physicians. Our continued commitment to that mission has led to numerous distinctions and recognitions for our hospitals and facilities. It’s also inspired the creation of WellSpan’s Future Physician Scholarship Program.
WellSpan Health believes the cost of medical school shouldn’t deter the next generation of physicians from chasing their dreams. Through this program, WellSpan can ensure our communities access exceptional care by supporting talent in our rural service areas. Every open physician spot means approximately 2,000 people in that community are at risk of not receiving timely care.
Q. How does the program work?
A. WellSpan Health’s Future Physician Scholarship Program provides scholarships to local medical students who commit to working at WellSpan upon completing medical school. It’s inspired by a successful program at Summit Health, which joined the WellSpan family in 2018. The program links scholarship recipients across the WellSpan footprint to practice near their hometown after residency.
Q. How is the program funded?
A. The program is funded through WellSpan’s five foundations and gifts from donors across our communities. Continued philanthropy through community fundraising will sustain the program.
Q. Who can apply?
A. You can apply for a scholarship upon acceptance to medical school.
Q. What are the benefits?
A. WellSpan recognizes that medical school is a significant financial investment. In addition to financial support, WellSpan will provide encouragement and connection on your journey through medical school and residency. In exchange, you'll commit to working at WellSpan for a period of years after residency or fellowship.
Q. What are the milestones?
A. 1. Application. 2. Initial phone interview. 3. Official interview. 4. Selection. 5. Contract.
Q. How can I learn more?

Dr. Martin is now a lead physician in Chambersburg.
“I did not have to worry about student loan debt, which was a huge relief as I worked through the process of medical school and residency. Once I was ready to start practicing, I knew I was coming home to Chambersburg to take care of our community. The financial support I received was very helpful,” says Dr. Martin.
Dr. Martin's story is just one example of how the Future Physician Scholarship Fund can help students build their career with WellSpan.
As a nonprofit, we reinvest in our communities to improve the health and wellness of our patients.
