General Summary
Provides technical services and assistance in the operating room at an advanced level and in accordance with established procedures, protocols and regulations. Prepares operating rooms for surgery using appropriate techniques. Acts as a resource for Surgical Technologist I and Surgical Technologist II.
Essential Functions:
Meets all expectations of Surgical Technologist I and Surgical Technologist II.
Prepares the operating room for cases by setting up table, instruments and supplies according to type of case.
Prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks supplies.
Drapes patients for surgical procedures.
Assists the surgical team during operative procedures. Demonstrates and applies advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the first scrub role in a majority of surgical procedures.
Assists in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures and sponges.
Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
Assists surgeons during operations by retracting tissues under direction.
Identifies and cares for specimens.
Teaches scrub role to newly hired Surgical Technologists and RNs.
Acts as a mentor and role model for Surgical Technologist I and II. Demonstrates leadership abilities.
Performs the preceptor role in the training of students.
May perform the following duties depending on assignment:- Assist with endoscopy procedures and scope reprocessing- Orient staff to endoscopy procedures to include reprocessing- Point person for maintaining departmental inventory
Common Expectations:
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment. Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops.
Attends meetings as required.
Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or GED Required
Work Experience:
3 years Relevant experience. Required
Licenses:
Certified Surgical Technologist Upon Hire Required or
Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Upon Hire Required and
Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required
Courses and Training:
Completion of course for surgical technologists. Upon Hire Required
