Safety Specialist - East Region- Full-Time - Day

Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

On-call rotation 1 week every 7-8 weeks (nights & weekends)

General Summary

Provides safety evaluation services at a beginning/intermediate skills level to facilitate the prevention of injuries across the System, as well as ensure that WellSpan training and labor practices are compliant with applicable OSHA standards. Assists in the advancement of safety initiatives across the organization to ensure full compliance with WellSpan's Safety policies. Performs fieldwork and assessments on own or as part of a small team. Capable of converting data, findings, and observations into written reports that WellSpan Leaders can use to interpret site safety conditions and make related decisions. Possesses a good working knowledge of EHS systems and processes that can be applied to site assessments, discussions, and regulatory compliance evaluations. Directs employee participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance performance. Effective Communicator who facilitates the learning of skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Provides safety evaluation of industrial and patient care areas for hazard and preventative means throughout the System; available during all three shifts.
  • Ensures that System workplace and labor practices are compliant with relevant OSHA regulations and provides consulting activities to ensure that workplace hazards are correctly identified and solutions are delivered within management driven timeframes and budgets.
  • Functions as a safety consultant to departments, service lines or entities for System-wide or entity-wide initiatives requiring education and training.
  • Active participant in and contributor to Tier 3 & Tier 4 Huddles. Engages in and openly contributes to EHS Staff and Department meetings.
  • Serves as a member of System Employee Safety Committees (i.e., Workplace Violence, Patient Handling, Slips/Trips/Falls, Sharps and Needlesticks/BBP) and Environment of Care committees.
  • Applies proven methodologies to conduct Risk Assessments and gathers and digests data to develop and contribute to plans and approaches to reduce employee and system safety hazards.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in PPE that ensures system adequacy and provides employee training and education as necessary.
  • Conducts Indoor Air Quality Assessments (IAQs), Illumination Studies, and Ergonomic Assessments, including site evaluations, data collection, and effective report writing.
  • Documents and guides incident investigations to facilitate root cause identification and tracking of incident trends, corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) and other dashboard metrics.
  • Assists the Director-Employee Health with project design, management and implementation of new initiatives.
  • Facilitates the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of System-wide safety education programs.
  • Participates in presentations to leaders, administration and nursing management.
  • Coordinates the use of appropriate education resources for identified education needs, including the development of self-learning/computer-based training or train the trainer programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Bachelors Degree Preferred

Work Experience:

  • No experience. Required

Courses and Training:

  • Graduate of an accredited program in industrial hygiene or related field Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft office suite.
  • Ability to listen and interact with employees on health and safety issues.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize objectives and clearly communicate priorities to others.
  • Highly goal and results oriented, with minimal need for supervision.
  • Effective writing and presentation skills.
