General Summary

Responsible for overall coordination of all activities related to the WellSpan Institute for Patient Safety (WIPS) Patient Safety Organization (PSO), including program development, maintaining the PSO's compliance with federal regulatory requirements, workforce management, independent analysis of patient safety work product and day to day activities. Identifies safety improvement opportunities and works in close collaboration with WIPS providers, including the WellSpan Health patient safety team, entity and system leadership, as well as physicians and staff in all hospital and ambulatory facilities to close these gaps. Coordinates and manages patient safety programs that support the organization achieving a highly reliable and just culture that results in preventable, harmful events being rare occurrences.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures ongoing compliance with federal PSO certification requirements, including annual assessments and reporting responsibilities, triannual recertification, ongoing monitoring and related regulatory activities.
  • Directs the PSO's program development in support of WellSpan's strategic plan.
  • Leads and actively participates in PSO programs through all phases of identification, development, implementation, and ongoing performance.
  • Manages PSO patient safety activities, policies and procedures.
  • As directed, represents WIPS with external organizations.
  • Works alongside legal counsel, peer review, patient safety, accreditation and licensure and information technology to assure security, regulatory compliance, and proper management of PSO Patient Safety Work Product (PSWP).
  • Performs independent analysis of PSWP to identify performance and process opportunities among WIPS providers.
  • Supports affiliated providers' workforce development through targeted training programs. Attends affiliated provider's committee meetings as needed.
  • Disseminates PSO key learnings and activities through collaboration with affiliated providers' leadership and production of summaries to diverse audiences using professional writing.
  • Develops and leads complex interdepartmental and organizational patient safety initiatives that address identified gaps in performance or improvement aspirations.
  • Collaborates with patient safety team to identify and facilitate necessary practice changes based on clinical and administrative data and current research findings.
  • Coordinates and manages special projects as assigned.

Travel Requirements:

  • Estimated Amount: 10% - Travel to WellSpan Health sites for meetings, training, group facilitation. Travel outside of WellSpan to represent WIPS at external organizations.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Required
  • Masters Degree In business, legal, or healthcare-related field. Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Clinical or health care experience. Required and
  • Experience in Patient Safety or Risk Management. Required
  • Health care system administrative expertise. Preferred

Licenses:

  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety within 2 years Required
  • Licensed Physical Therapist Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Licensed Occupational Therapist Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Licensed Practical Nurse Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Licensed Registered Nurse Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Licensed Registered Pharmacist Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist Upon Hire Preferred

Courses and Training:

  • Paralegal Certificate. Upon Hire Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiar with healthcare facility operations including Patient Safety/Quality/Risk Management functions, Peer Review, Medical Executive Committee and Governing Board functions, licensing and accreditation requirements, and medical malpractice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Careful attention to detail, Microsoft Office expertise, self-motivated and flexible.
  • Able to learn quickly and work without supervision.
  • Professional presentation experience.
  • Knowledge of basic data analytics.
  • Ability to work alongside all levels of organizational staff and leadership.
