General Summary

Supervises the day-to-day operations of the Central Sterile Processing Department. Ensures the recommended standards for set assembly, decontamination, inspection, containerizing and sterilization of surgical instruments are met. Ensures that the workflow remains consistent and continuous, providing superior customer service.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides direct and effective supervision to ensure timely delivery of clean, sterile or High Level Disinfection instrumentation and medical equipment.
  • Maintains, monitors and controls service specific instrumentation and supplies for assigned Operating Room service lines; delegates responsibilities to assigned Sterile Processing Technician I and Technician II staff.
  • Reviews the daily surgical schedule and obtains instruments, supplies and equipment for scheduled and emergent procedures. Reconciles the surgical schedule and instrument/equipment inventory to prioritize instrumentation utilization for case carts.
  • Collaborates with Central Sterile Processing Manager in evaluating change in policies and procedures and implements appropriate systems to accommodate these changes.
  • Ensures that all equipment is functioning properly, notifies manufacturer or medical/instrument repair immediately when malfunctions occur and follows up on recurring issues.
  • Monitors inventory levels to maintain adequate supplies, reduce waste and control costs.
  • Ensures that all externs/students adhere to both departmental and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Monitors, maintains and records all department quality assurance systems activities in accordance with departmental and facility policy, The Joint Commission, DNV, CDC, FDA, ANSI/AAMI, OSHA and DOH regulations.
  • Collaborates with all departments to ensure that appropriate professional standards are consistently applied within both surgery and outpatient care areas.
  • Coordinates service-specific instrumentation procurement with Operating Room Service Line RNs, Sterile Processing Technician I and Technician II staff and the Central Sterile Processing Manager as needed.
  • Maintains the Biological Monitoring System/Records for Instrument Processing and Immediate Use Steam Sterilization Sterilizers used in Perioperative Suite.
  • Performs shift huddles in order to communicate department status with oncoming shift staff members.
  • Performs in a technician capacity as needed.

Common Expectations:

  • Prepares work schedules, assigns tasks, evaluates work performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Performs work of a similar nature as required.
  • Conducts departmental orientation, training, annual competency testing and educational in-service programs to maintain staff competency levels.
  • Assists management in payroll data entry.
  • Supports continuous improvement of quality and service to ensure goals of excellence in clinical outcomes and customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates leadership and collaborative management skills and effective verbal and written communication skills. This includes documentation, verbal or written communication and/or presentation.
  • Meets regularly with management team and staff.
  • Compiles data for and prepares regularly scheduled or special reports, analyses and statements.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards set forth by applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Experience in Central Sterile Processing. Required and
  • Supervisory experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician Upon Hire Required or
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Upon Hire Required and
  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor Upon Hire Preferred or
  • Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Upon Hire Preferred and
  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, leadership and computer skills.
  • Proficiency in transporting and disposing of hazardous materials per hospital policy.
  • Must have developed analytical decision making abilities.
  • Must be capable of working in team environment with staff of varying backgrounds.
  • Must also be able to work with Perioperative Nursing staff to coordinate processing of instrument sets to accommodate the daily O.R. case load.
