Heart and Vascular Technologist III

General Summary

Provides technical support and assistance to the physician during heart and vascular procedures. Performs scrub and hemodynamic monitoring duties with cardiac catheterizations using clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional judgment in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols. Provides care, assessment prior, during and post-procedural instruction to patients. Prepares and maintains all pertinent information related to procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Assists and performs diagnostic invasive procedures in the heart and vascular labs. Provides care for patients prior, during and after procedures. Scrubs and assists physicians with diagnostic and invasive procedures. Responds to patient distress situations and assists with equipment quality control and inventory management. Prepares sterile trays, instruments, supplies and equipment necessary for procedures, and maintains sterile field. Provides all appropriate services to safely and efficiently complete patient-s procedures. Maintains knowledge of cardiac concepts and clinical practices.
  • Possesses the knowledge & skills level of all procedures performed. Capable of assisting with all new procedures i.e. IVUS, ICE, laser, Impella, extractions etc. Capable of assisting physicians in multiple areas of heart and vascular. Prepares, utilizes, and acts as resource for necessary equipment for each procedure. Possesses the ability and knowledge to troubleshoot all equipment.
  • Proficient at assisting, circulating, recording, and stimming. area specific high complexity interventional procedures. These procedures include but are not limited to: TAVR, Mitral Clip, Valvuloplasty, Atherectomy, Laser procedures, Atrial appendage Occluders, Complex Coronary Interventions including Chronic Total Occlusions, TEVAR, EVAR, Neuro Coiling, Stroke Revascularization, Carotid Stenting, Advanced Ablations, Extractions, and Device Implantations. Able to utilize non-invasive equipment during procedures including intracardiac echo (ICE) and ultrasound technologies. All technologists will be proficient/competent utilizing imaging equipment.
  • Must be Cross-Trained in multiple areas to do multiple types of procedures including but not limited to; Cath/PCI, Vascular, Electrophysiology, Structural Heart, or Endovascular Neurosurgery.
  • Responsible for patient safety in the Cardiac lab and Advanced Procedural Suite. Must be able to recognize cardiac arrhythmias and respond according to emergency protocols. Operates external cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator. Intervenes with appropriate therapy, such as high quality CPR, in the event of cardiac emergencies.
  • As procedures require, will monitor and record patient hemodynamic status during procedures. Performs calculations and processes data based on collected hemodynamic data. Confirms all procedural and equipment charges are accurate, proper orders are signed and charted, and all procedural documentation is completed.
  • Assumes call responsibilities as required to assure complete call coverage.

Common Expectations:

  • Follows radiation safety policies as outlined by the NRC and York Hospital-s Radiation Safety Committee. Ensures radiation safety for all team members and patients. Wears proper radiation safety attire (lead apron, lead goggles and radiation badge). Maintains proper distance from radiation source when obtainable.
  • Properly handles and processes images to include storage and transfer. Ensures correct patient and physician information at start and completion of procedures. Capable of copying and supplying images via CD/DVD to patients, physicians and other facilities for continuing care purposes. Capable of obtaining and transferring images to and from various facilities. For Invasive Cardiology/Electrophysiology Technologists, they must be able to perform queries from Xper, Xcelera. Visage, and EPIC.
  • Must obtain and maintain area specific certifications and maintain a satisfactory level on yearly evaluations.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Prepares and maintains written documentation as required by the profession and the department.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and current literature. Attends in-services, workshops and staff meetings as required.
  • Active in two or more approved activities Ex: committees, radiation safety officer, coding. Attends offsite training/educational conferences. Provides formal presentation of information obtained at educational conferences and training sites to staff within 30 days of conference/training. May include but not limited to poster and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Acts as preceptor/mentor to students and staff members in procedural areas. Includes but not limited to assisting, circulating, monitoring, and stimming. Precepts new staff on procedures such as complex Neuro, Vascular, PCI/CTO, Structural Heart, Electrophysiology, and all new procedures. Adheres to the educational guidelines provided through Wellspan education services, the department education committee, and the department specific Educator.
  • Demonstrates proficient inter-departmental communication and interaction within Wellspan and other facilities. Ambassador to visiting staff and physicians.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Certificate Program Diploma from an accredited school of Cardiovascular/Radiology Technology. Required or
  • Associates Degree Degree from an accredited school of Cardiovascular/Radiology Technology. Required

Work Experience:

  • 5 years Of Cardiovascular, Vascular Interventional, Interventional Radiology, Electrophysiology or Neuro Interventional experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Technologist-Radiography - ARRT Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Technologist-Cardiac Interventional Radiology - ARRT Upon Hire Required or
  • Registered Technologist-Vascular Interventional Radiology - ARRT Upon Hire Required and
