Director - System Hospital Pharmacy Services

Location: WellSpan Health, York, PA
Schedule: Full Time

General Summary

Administratively responsible and accountable for multi-campus guiding and overseeing all management, business, and clinical activities of WellSpan Hospital pharmacy services. Reports to and collaborates with the Senior Director of Pharmacy Services to establish and execute the vision and strategy of hospital pharmacy services. Responsible for ensuring effective, efficient, economical, and operational outcomes. Assures continuous quality improvement, compliance with regulatory agencies, and financial health of all operations. Supervises regional hospital pharmacy directors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Guides and oversees management of hospital pharmacy services to assure economical outcomes, regulatory compliance, budget compliance, quality assurance, medication safety and maximum productivity.
  • Monitors hospital operational budget and capital budget preparation, assuring appropriate involvement of the staff and other support services.
  • Collaborates with the finance team in the hospital pharmacy budget development and regularly monitors compliance and variances, making and supporting necessary adjustments.
  • Promotes a high level of collaboration between pharmacy leadership, physician leadership and nursing leadership to standardize hospital pharmacy operations across the system in preparation for Central Pharmacy Distribution Center.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Director of Pharmacy with the continuing development and successful implementation of a system-wide drug formulary and drug use strategy as well as mechanisms for monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Collaborates with Pharmacy leadership team and Finance team to develop 340B enterprise strategy.
  • Works in collaboration with the Pharmacy Director of Procurement and Contracting to ensure optimal pharmaceutical product purchasing and inventory control.
  • Promotes WellSpan-wide clinical integration efforts by collaborating with the Pharmacy Leadership team to ensure a systemized approach for all pharmaceutical activities.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and accreditation standards through collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy Safety and Compliance.
  • Continually reviews existing policies, procedures and systems and makes recommendations for improvement where appropriate.

Common Expectations:

  • Recommends staffing levels, selects, and assigns staff, evaluates performance, evaluates/tests competencies (as applicable), provides orientation, training and continuing education of staff, and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Creates a model for continuous improvement (based upon the LEAN Management System) which continuously assesses and offers improvement ideas for the department/service line/entity/System's performance. Maintains appropriate quality control/assessment programs (if applicable).
  • Develops, establishes, and implements annual goals, objectives, metrics for success and policies and procedures for department/service line/entity operation, and which guide and support the success of the department/service line/entity's services.
  • Develops and recommends appropriate budget(s) for area(s) of responsibility and ensures that area(s) operates within approved budget.
  • Creates a departmental culture of commitment to Patient & Family Centered Care and identifies opportunities to professionally challenge when provider-centered behaviors could be replaced with patient-centered standards of behavior.
  • Demonstrates a leadership commitment to safety for patients, visitors and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors; reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Performs in a staff pharmacist role when necessary, including dispensing medications.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population. Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment.
  • Directs the preparation and maintenance of department reports. Prepares periodic reports for top management, as required.
  • Recommends sufficient space and other resources required by the department/service line/entity.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Pharmacy Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Doctorate Doctorate (Pharm.D.) Preferred

Work Experience:

  • 3 years Relevant experience. Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Registered Pharmacist Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • Completion of 5-year program from accredited school of pharmacy. Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven managerial skills.
