Chief Medical Officer

Location: WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital, York, PA
Schedule: Part Time

General Summary

Administers the operations and activities of the Medical Staff and supports the activities of its appointed officers. Reviews the quality, adequacy and appropriateness of medical services throughout their Location. Develops, implements and maintains all medical education programs throughout the System.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures the efficient, economic, and quality performance of assigned departments/areas of responsibility to support or provide quality health care services.
  • Ensures the provision of affordable health care services by the acquisition, utilization, and organization of available resources and the development of improved techniques and practices.
  • Responsible for the efficiency and effectiveness of systems that support the delivery of patient care; the quality of patient care for all disciplines; and the achievement of quality patient outcomes.
  • Responsible for implementing an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care delivered to patients.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies by continually monitoring operations and its programs and physical properties, and initiating changes where required.
  • Serves as a resource in managing physician performance issues, including impaired professional situations.
  • Ensures a consistent approach to physician recruitment and assistance.
  • Develops, reviews and maintains programs for monitoring of practice, credentials review, privilege delineation and utilization review of members of the Medical Staff.
  • Recommends and updates long-range plans which support the general philosophy and objectives.
  • Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical areas in decision-making structures and processes.

Common Expectations:

  • Assists in the development and preparation of budgets. Allocates funds and ensures area(s) of responsibility operate within budget.
  • Manages employees through subordinates, usually other managers. Establishes performance goals, allocates resources and assesses policies for direct subordinates. Provides orientation, training, and continuing education of employees in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Participates on internal committees and external professional/civic service organizations. Meets with members of the community to promote good community relations.
  • Initiates and/or maintains organization wide policies and procedures to facilitate the kind and type of organization needed to accomplish the System's aims, objectives and programs, and which guide and support the provision of System services.
  • Participates in Medical Staff activities as required and/or as requested.
  • Observes the Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Location and the Medical Staff.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) Required or
  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Required

Licenses:

  • Licensed Medical Physician and Surgeon Upon Hire Required or
  • Licensed Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Upon Hire Required

Courses and Training:

  • Certification by appropriate Board. Upon Hire Required and
  • Completion of an appropriate residency program. Upon Hire Required and
  • Must qualify and be a member of the Medical Staff of their Location. Upon Hire Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Can develop and apply management, performance improvement and healthcare delivery concepts and strategies.
